Are they intelligent?

Of course they are. Maybe that small rodent is not as intellignet as a big animal, a dog for example. But they still are very intelligent. You can learn some cool tings to your degus.

  • Shoulder standing: this is a very simple ting to learn to your degu. Theres the way I used to learn it to my degus.

Step one: Go in a safe room with your degu. ( a room where if the degu escapes from your shoulder you can catch it with no problems). Close the door and sit on the floor. Put the degu on your shoulder. Stay there for a moment and if the degu gets off, put him back. And if he stays there, you can often give him a treat or someting he likes to eat. Repeat this once or twice a period of  2 or 3 days.

Explainations: By siting on the floor your can be sure that if your degu jumps off your shoulder, he wont get hurt. (since he is only starting to lean that trick). By giving him a treat, he will realize that what he did was good. But you gotta repeat the exercice many times for him to understand.

Step 2: Now you have to repeat the same exercice but this time you will begg on your knees and give him less treats. I suggest you do it 1 or 2 times in a day and this during 2 days.

Step 3: Do the same ting but while siting on a chair.  Now if the degus seems ok and dosent panic or jump off your shoulder, you can now go to the next step.

Step 4: You can now try to stand up with the degu on your shoulder. I suggest that you ask for some one to assist you. If the degu looks ok you can walk very slowly

Thats the way I used for my degus. If you have any questions about that you can always email me at hey_audryo@hotmail.com for QUICK answers.
